Homeland Calling: Words from a New Generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voices by Desert Pea Media, Ellen van Neerven

adventurous challenging emotional hopeful informative inspiring fast-paced

4.0

This is a collection of hip hop lyrics written by young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all across Australia. It’s good as a book, but it’s even better if you listen to the songs on YouTube or Spotify and follow along on the page.

I found myself flicking back and forth between each song and the glossary at the back which helped translate between traditional languages or Aboriginal English on the one hand, and whitefulla English on the other.

I really appreciated the section at the back of the book, where editor Ellen Van Neervan explained some of the key historical events, dreaming stories and current issues affecting the people who made each of the songs featured in the book.
