I’ll be real I read this a couple months before the author was exposed for masquerading as Latine. To try to insert yourself into queer POC spaces uninvited is one thing, but it’s a whole different realm of weird behavior to pretend to be such. Now with that out of the way, I’ll actually give my review (which are usually more based on how I felt reading the book than anything).

In all honesty, it was a pretty decent read. I’m easily impressed but 😭 I thought the concept was cool and the storyline was gripping enough that I was intrigued the entirety of the novella. There was a bit of a rushed storyline at the end, to the point where things started to get a little muddled and confusing, but it wasn’t substantial enough to cause any real problems with comprehension of the overall plot. The interactions between the main characters had their good and “meh” moments. It was one of those romances that have an unnatural buildup where it’s a bit choppy, but something that can be overlooked. In general though, I liked the witty banter and the relationships between main and supporting characters.

We get a taste of the thriller promised, though I’d call it more suspense. Enough mild gore to keep me entertained, but there’s always room for improvement. But to be fair, I’m a horror junkie with high standards on that end.

Not factoring in the disturbing author behavior, I’d give this a solid 3.75: short, sweet, a bit choppy, but enjoyable. Thank gods I bought the ebook for a dollar instead of a hard copy. This drama has given me trust issues.
