The Voice of the Night by Dean Koontz

3.0

I’ve read several of Dean Koontz’s books over the last 4-5 years. To date, this is probably my least favourite. Perhaps this is one of his earlier works, and I’ve been reading more practiced works of his, I dunno. As with each of his novels, the action related to the main plot kicks in fairly quickly. However, this time it felt like it came into play TOO quickly. I feel like EVERYTHING moved along fairly quickly in this book—introduction of new characters, putting plans into place... I think it would’ve been beneficial to give more depth to each of the main characters, especially in terms of their family dynamic, to better understand why they were the way they were. I also feel like the title is misleading. Colin refers to the voices that he hears, but they played absolutely no role throughout the story. And then they just suddenly disappear? Again, backstory likely would’ve been helpful to at least have more depth and understanding to that aspect of his personality. Lastly, I wish they had expanded on the “blood brothers“ aspect. It seemed like the element of the supernatural that always exists in Koontz’s books was going to play out through the blood exchange they had made, but that never really happened. That would have been an interesting piece. If this was the first book by Dean Koontz that I had ever read, I probably wouldn’t pick up another one. Fortunately I have several good ones under my belt, so I am willing to try again the next time I need a suspenseful thriller—perhaps something further up in the timeline of his works.
