What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown
3.5
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Loveable characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Honestly, Jane/Esme didn't stand a chance.

She came from 2 flawed, self-centered people who had no business being together, let alone having a child. Teresa/Tess was driven as a woman in a male dominated field, and Adam had unresolved childhood trauma that escalated into madness.

His views on the future of technology held some merit, but it's not the boogey man from his manifesto either. The evolution of technology won't be stopped.

Tess reacted as distant as I expected her to reuniting with her daughter.  She didn't care about getting to know Esme. She was a prop to make her look better. Silicon Valley is all about appearances and climbing the ladder, like politics.

Lionel trusting someone who showed up from a chat room is peak 90s internet. Pre internet safety and predators learning to exploit.

Part 1 (Montana) was more compelling than part 2 (San Francisco) keeps it from being a solid 4 for me.

But again, I enjoyed the way Janelle Brown explores humanity and the human psyche through her characters.
