Fire Force, Vol. 1 by Atsushi Ohkubo

3.5

The art is pretty great, I especially love the dense city backgrounds. The premise isn't too deep, but an interesting world building mashup between exorcists and fire fighters.

The biggest detractor here is the fan service. Actually, we say fan service in this genre a lot, but let's be more specific. The problem is the sexual exploitation of women. A random frame of female characters showering. The underage male protagonist coping multiple feels by accident. A female side character with some sort of plot device that involves getting men to grope her against their will. For what exactly? For comedy? For gross horny fans? It just comes out of nowhere and I'm exhausted by how normalized obnoxious sexual exploitation non sequitors are in manga and anime.

I gave this a try after putting down the anime after a couple episodes. Turns out I stopped watching right where volume 1 ends, so reading this likely won't get me to give the show another chance and very likely won't get me to read more if it's just a generic shonen studded with random slimy fan service.
