The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

5.0

I was excited for this book but I was surprised to like it even more than I expected. It's set in 6th century Scotland and based on Scottish Arthurian myths & stories. It traces the life of Languoreth, who is the daughter of a king and whose duty is to marry and make an alliance for the family. Her twin brother Lailoken is destined to be a Wisdom Keeper (and will become Merlin). It's absorbing and traces her life from childhood to motherhood, hitting on some key time periods of her life. There's a lot of conflict between the Old Way and the new religion of Christianity, which has zealots trying to take over. (Not a fan of the church being the enemy but it is in this.) It's a female-centric version of the story which is great.
