The Darkest Night
by Gena Showalter
I wanted to give this three stars, but I think I was just being too demanding. It was a pretty good book. I thought there were a lot of similarities between it and JR Ward's books, but I definitely like this better. I love the premise: immortals who opened Pandora's box now have to house in their bodies the demons they released.
I feel sorry for these guys. They've been suffering for centuries. Literally. The hero in DARKEST NIGHT is murdered every night. Not only is he stabbed six times with a sword, but he's taken to hell where he burns until morning. Ouch.
The thing that docked this a star for me was the heroine. I just didn't like her that much. Also, I didn't buy the ending, that Ashlyn would make the sacrifice she did. I mean, seriously, she just met Maddox, what? Two or three days ago? There wasn't any kind of guarantee her action would actually solve anything. At the very least, she should have done some research. Maybe waited until their one week anniversary, just to make sure Maddox didn't suddenly become a jerk.
I very much liked Gena Showalter's writing, though. Great pacing. Great style.
