The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennett
Beautiful prose, thought-provoking, timely. I can see why this book has received so much praise, though it’s not a favorite for me. The spanning of generations is expertly done and I really appreciated that the author didn't moralize, but rather let the characters be themselves, flawed as they were. But the book started very slow and never really found a sense of urgency. And I always felt like I was kept at a distance from the characters--like I was inches away from *truly* knowing them (though that might have been intentional).
