The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna

3.75

This is full of quirky and absurd Finnish humour, telling frankly fantastical tales with deadpan realism, astute detail, and nuanced characters.

A disillusioned man rescues an injured wild hare and walks out on his life - fed up with his job, his wife, and Helsinki city life - and into the Finnish countryside, hare-in-hand. A year of comic misadventures ensue. We meet a wild and expansive cast of strangers, from benevolent souls and sympathetic free spirits to gun-toting priests, cultist thieves, wild bears, and entitled nobility. A mad, entertaining journey of a book.
