Dad By My Side
by Soosh
A beautiful series of vignettes showing a touching and sensitive bond between a daughter and her father, Dad By My Side has an interesting story to share in its conception. Posting images on Instagram of a large mountain of a man with his little daughter in roles more often associated with the a mother, perhaps, Soosh's illustrations drew a lot of attention and, a year later, were given words and a structure and placed into a picturebook.
Created 'during a difficult period' in her life, Soosh was looking for someone to protect her: a hero who could support her during a trying time. Turning pencil to paper, she created an Atlas of a man who loves his daughter 'unconditionally and forever'. The debut then, created with watercolours on eggshell-textured paper, shows a father who is round, hairy, huge in physique and yet utterly trusting, warm and caring. A bear of man with the tenderness that only a parent can give a child.
Scenes throughout show a father doing needlework, consoling his daughter when her pet dies, tying up his daughter's hair, measuring her height and teaching her chess. Backgrounds are minimal in order to help extenuate the father's great size and the daughter's face is often mostly concealed so that we can feel the comfort that she feels. I especially liked the roles that he played throughout but I had the nagging feeling that there had to be no mother present for him to be able to take on these roles. Nevertheless, it's a touching ode to parenthood and the strength and hope a parent can give to their child.
