A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane
5.0

2020 Re-read:

I mentioned in my re-read review of Mystic River how being older made that better and it is the same here with more understanding of the underlying subtext of the book. It seems to have been written in the aftermath of the Rodney King trial and the subsequent riots and it is frightening that the same conversations held within the book are still going on today.

Kenzie and Gennaro are wonderful still, although I have to wonder if Patrick might be “cancelled” in this day and age with some of the things that go on in this book including his seeming harassment of Angie(!). The story bubbles up in typical PI fashion, but it is the things that surround it that transcend the novel to excellence as conversations with supporting characters display the morals and commentary therein.

I’ve always loved Lehane, but being in my mid-30s and seemingly a better, more experienced reader has brought more life to the books and I look forward to getting through even more of them in the months ahead.
