Game Changer
by Neal Shusterman
"There are choices we make, choices that are made for us, and things we ignore long enough until all choices have fallen away. I've been plenty guilty of ignoring stuff I don't want to deal with until it doesn't matter anymore, or it's too screwed up to bother fixing."
I haven't read a ton of [a:Neal Shusterman|19564|Neal Shusterman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1246977170p2/19564.jpg] yet, but everything I have read by him I have really enjoyed. When I saw his name on this new release, I knew I wanted to read it. I went into this book almost completely blind, and perhaps that's the way to read this one. In a nut shell, we meet Ash, a white high school football player who gets knocked into an alternate dimension on a particularly hard tackle. At first, the changes in the universe are subtle: for example, stop signs are now blue instead of red. As Ash continues to get hit in football games, the universe continues to alter and shift in more drastic ways and Ash learns he is the literal center of the Earth. I don't want to share all of the changes as I think that will ruin the story, but some of the changes seemed far fetched, even for Shusterman.
I got done with the book and I felt like I really related with some other reviews that mentioned this book felt a little white savior-y. I would have to agree with those statements. The concept of this book is so interesting but I don't feel like it was executed properly. I saw in the Acknowledgments this book is being adapted for Netflix. Seeing how this gets adapted will be interesting. Regardless of my mixed feelings about this book, Shusterman's writing style is a force to be reckoned with. I was immediately sucked into this story and couldn't wait to continue finding out what happened with Ash. I will continue to read books by Shusterman because his writing is so incredible.
Also, shout out to this book for being the first fiction book I've read that has referenced the Covid-19 pandemic.
TW: Racism, racial slurs, microaggressions, segregation, white supremacy, assault, sexism, unjust incarceration, gaslighting, emotional/physical abuse, homophobia, forced outing of a gay character, hate crimes, attempted murder, blood, PTSD, death of a loved one, selling drugs.
