I want to start off by saying; read your trigger warnings. This book includes numerous triggers such as child marriage, child sex abuse, religious trauma, medical trauma, torture, sexual assault, rape, polygamy, sibling sharing, child abuse, being buried alive, genital mutilation, and others. If ANY of these bother you, do not read this book.

The story: Well- I’m traumatized 🫠 In a good way, I guess. The happy ever after saved my mentality from breaking, because what in the actual fuck was some of those rituals/punishments?? Like- this had me up at 3:00 in the morning staring at the wall. I practically felt everything going on, and it had me squirming. This plot made me angry, sad, confused, and straight up grateful that I am no longer apart of an organized religion and that hormonal birth control is a thing! The plot of this book being set in a cult almost like the FLDS church, was an interesting choice. I have never really read anything to do with religion or cults other than Priest by Sierra Simone, and Forgive Me Father by Katerina StClare. But those were definitely not as dark and deranged as this book. This book was beautifully written, was clear and concise, and compelling. Every turn of the page had my heart beating faster and there was absolutely nothing predictable. It was so well done that I can’t be mad I might have nightmares and need therapy from this book.

The characters: There are so many characters that I loathed in this book and that still make me want to throw up and throw them in a chest filled with scorpions. I want to take their spine out and choke them with it. That’s how much I hate some of these characters. However, Zebadiah I felt was a good man from the beginning. Although he changed BIG TIME throughout the book, in some bad ways, his redemption will always remain true. He questioned things and wanted to protect Laur since the beginning and I love how devoted he was. And Laur- Ms Laural Ann… my sweet baby girl how much you have gone through… Gosh her POV made me tear up so many times. Trying to understand what is happening and trying to make sense of everything, it was stressing me out! She was a little girl, and it was heartbreaking to watch her grow up. But the relationships that blossomed were so beautiful, and in the end every single traumatizing experience I read about was made up for. These characters, Laur and Zeb, they were victims in a man’s greedy world, and i just want to hug them 😭

The spice: I want you to know that my spice rating has absolutely nothing to do with sexual assault or rape. I find “spice” and sexual content to be different in my mind. 🌶️ worthy spice is loving, consensual, and fun. While sexual content is more just the content of sex. I put this as a 🌶️🌶️.5/5 on the pepper scale. So there were about 3-4.5 open book scenes that included elements of MM, oral, and anal. Other sexual content that was involved was traumatic, graphic, and absolutely inappropriate. There were multiple scenes and innuendos of rape of children and multiple rapes of women. Again PLEASE read your trigger warnings for this book!!

Some of the scenes that traumatized me but in emojis so you’ll only know if you’ve read the book:
