A brand new starbase set brand new captain James T Kirk on edge. WHy is it out here? How did they build it so quick, and why i sthe federation extending so many resources for what it claims is a simple colonization effort, and why did it need to be on the Klingon and Tholian's proverbial doorstep?

Meet Vanguard and crew, a station far from the federation core systems, that harbours quite a secret indeed. From a federation diplomatic attache who is secretly a klingon, to mold with a genome far too large to be natural there's a lot going on.

A truly great start to what I am sure will be a great series. If it suffers from anything it is having to set up too many characters, and concepts. The character glossary at the end helps a lot, and is worth reading after you get a few chapters in because it does not contain spoilers beyond that point.

Great read, as we have come to expect from David Mack's trek work.
