Victoria
by Daisy Goodwin
Princess Alexandrina has led a sheltered life, precious heir to the throne of England, her every movement is watched and her health protected. When she succeeds the the throne she is determined to do things well and that includes casting off the influence of her Mother's companion. Supported by her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, the Queen has to learn that she is subject to many rules of protocol and that she can't even choose her own husband without her family and government getting involved. However Alexandrina learns quickly and one of her first acts is to change her name, Alexandrina becomes Victoria and a new reign is set to thrive.
Just to start, I didn't watch the recent TV series that this book is the companion to and having read this book I'm rather pleased that I didn't waste the time! This is a cod-biography of the early years of Victoria's reign soared in so much sugar that it gives one a headache. I generally like fictionalised biographies but this is one that reads as though it were written as part of a Mills and Boon series. Politics, poverty and uprising are skated over and the central theme is the 'crush' that Victoria develops on her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. When Albert appears on the scene, all is rushed and with much heaving of bosoms!
