The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

4.0

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is essentially a retelling of Frankenstein from the perspective of Elizabeth Lavenza - an orphan taken in by the Frankenstein family as a "gift" for Victor. Elizabeth is an amazingly complex character. She is smart and manipulative and willing to do what is necessary to protect herself. Through her eyes, we get a fresh vision of Victor's insanity and also, we see just how scary it was to be a woman in 18th century Europe.

My favorite thing about this book was the writing. The language was lovely, and really set the tone for a slow-burning dark read. For the first two-thirds of the book, things seemed to drag out but the last chapters left me breathless. The ending was amazing. I thought I had an idea of how the story was going to wrap up, but I was pretty off. This book is a must-read for any Frankenstein fan.
