A Shadow of Light by Bella Forrest
2.0

So far this is my least favorite of the series. There was a lot that went on that REALLY bothered me.

First up, the book starts with Derek leaving Sophia with the hunters because they convinced him that's what's right and because she can't change to a vampire it's really the only way she'll be happy: if they both move on.

Right here is where I did a massive eye roll. It's sadly a cliche of the genre, but worse yet, it didn't line up with the story. They spent three books deciding they were together forever no matter what. Sophia spent time convincing him that they belonged together no matter what and Derek spent time convincing her that his intentions are true and he doesn't care about the mortality thing. It's the now that matters.

And then what?? He leave her. Because another moment of self-doubt. This was me: AGGHHHHH WTF. Of course she does make her way back to him but I hated how long it too. Every chapter I was so impatient for it to happen because when they're apart unfortunately, the book is kinda boring.

Secondly, the amount of times where people were nice and mean to each other. For example, and this was my least favorite situation: when Sophia and her father made amends. She spends half the book hating him for never being there, for being a hunter, for keeping her and Derek apart, etc. After a couple conversations BAM they're all "dad" and "daughter" and he cares deeply for her and she cares about him in all senses except for when it gets in the way of her and Derek. I found there to be a lot of that and it annoyed me because it's like Forrest is trying to tie this book up too neatly and it's annoying because it shouldn't be like that

In the case of the growing plot it's good and bad. Good because they're going new places with it and its very interesting. Bad because this book basically killed off the last of the bad people in books 1 -3 and this one so now there's a shift away from all that into something more.

I'm still gonna continue with the series but I'm taking a break to read a new release from a favorite author and then I will continue my journey with Sophia and Derek
