Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood by Marjorie M. Liu
2.0

The art continues to be stellar in this series, though book two was something I read more in hope of attaching myself to one of the characters than out of actual enjoyment.

I'm always kind of a hard sell on comics. If it's a character I adore, I will read some real crap to get more of them. If it's a character I'm not attached to yet, though, then I am the hardest sell.

Take Hawkeye. I adore the Fraction run now, but it took me the better part of a book and a half to get attached enough to willingly read more. And that is a damn good series, ask just about anyone.

Maybe a lot of my problem with Monstress is from the writing. There are pages and pages of exposition in each chapter, with splash pages in between issues of cats literally lecturing on the lore of the series. There's just such a disconnect that I end up reading the speech bubbles than going back to admire the art like it's some illustration stuck beside the text. The thing, though, is that this isn't a novel or picture book, it's a comic book; this is the medium that most embodies the old adage "show don't tell," so show me what's going on. You've got a dang amazing artist--COLABORATE with her.

There's so much potential in this series. Please don't waste it.
