Grim and vital subject matter (poverty, race, sex work, police corruption, power). Author was a teen when she wrote this; impressive, while at the same time the prose does read a little college-creative-writing juvenile, everything a little extra. I hadn't expected content in a similar vein to The Keeper, but I think reading the two in the same week highlighted both (1) the importance of the themes of exploitation, disempowerment, and police fuckery, and (2) that prose stylings matter more to me than perhaps I wish they did.
