I loved this standalone fantasy! The integration of the magic system, politics, and culture was fascinating and felt really original. The big reveal happened early enough in the story that it really shaped the characters and how they decided to deal with the repercussions. The themes were a bit heavy handed, and the overall feel of the book leaned a little YA because of it. I wanted more subtlety, especially since there were a lot of intense ideas that connected with our own day and age (misogyny, racism, imbalance of power in government, etc.). Such a good book!
