Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging
by Sebastian Junger
Not sure why this deeply flawed, idiosyncratic little book has been so popular. It begins with a remarkably simplistic, romanticized view of native cultures before wandering somewhat aimlessly towards a conclusion that reaches little of any significance. Most of Junger's amateurish analyses have been addressed elsewhere far better than Junger does in "Tribe."
Junger does make some very good points about how poorly we treat war veterans once they return home. Junger seems to think a more tribally oriented society might help these vets, by which he seems to mean empathetic. Perhaps. By all means we should be more understanding of what our veterans may have gone through. Better yet, though, would be to quit sending young men off to war. I don't think Junger would agree.
