Ties by Domenico Starnone
5.0

Ties is the first book I've read in Finnish from a praised master of contemporary Italian literature, Domenico Starnone. Released in 2014 and chosen by The New York Times as one of the best books in 2017, Ties is a brilliant novel that manages to paint such a vivid picture of the characters and their lives.

I find it hard to believe now, after finishing this book, that Aldo, Vanda, Sandro and Anna aren't real. It is remarkable that all of this story came from the mind of one man, mr. Starnone. He is an absolutely fantastic writer. This book was structured so perfectly, that when I read the last sentence, sitting in a fully packed train, I smiled at the book like an idiot. I smiled at Starnone's genius.

This book is incredibly observant of our roles as people and how, deep down below the stereotypes of husbands, wives, sons and daughters, we are all just human. Guided by our need to be our own selves and not a version of what others want us to be. The conflicts and hardships in our lives often rise from this need and its mismatch with what others want us to do, and Starnone hits the nail on the head about this topic page after page. Bravo! I need more of his books in my life right now.
