Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

I'm sort of conflicted about this book, and I think it's my own doing. I haven't been reading a lot of complicated fantasy lately, or I've been rereading things, so I'm not sure I went into this in the right mindset.

This book has a complicated premise and setting, therefore my lack of attention at some points really kept me from being as immersed as I feel like I should have been. This isn't the books fault. It does a great job of weaving together modern life, societal issues, Arthurian legends, American history (especially through the eyes of a black woman), grief, and trauma. One of these topics on their own would be complicated, but bringing them together makes a great story.

Bre is a great MC, I just wish I liked the other characters as well. Nick is cute and charming, but I never got the vibe from him that he was all that great, the story just relies on other people telling you how great he is. Maybe I just don't know him well enough, but I found myself comparing him to Dorian from Throne of Glass, and honestly there's no comparison. Even Sel, who is supposed to be the brooding mysterious might be a bad guy character, just fell flat. Also I got zero sparks there so I don't know why people think Bre and Sel is thing, but oh well.

I'm also mad at myself because I thought the second book was already out, so I'll probably end up having to reread this before I read it. Which is a good thing, I can give it the attention it deserves.
