Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

I started this as an audiobook but got too impatient and borrowed the book to read it, not because it was too interesting or anything but simply because the story was not progressing beyond a point and I simply wanted to get it done with. The characters get caught, try and escape, get caught again and try and escape again from villains who are too stupid anyway. The author writes pages and pages about the characters' love for books and beyond a point it gets boring to read page after page about how 'the word tastes on your tongue' or about how a book felt in your hand..

Now, the story is for kids, but that shouldn't stop an author from developing good characters. The villains literally jump out of a book and do nothing but villainy. No dialogues except to threaten the heroes. There heroes do nothing but love books and long to read more books. The only interesting character was Dustfinger and he's not enough to carry the story forward in any way.

Seems like a lost opportunity.
