Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch

5.0

It took a bit for me to get into the story in the beginning. A bit hiccup-py, but it gained momentum and I ended up loving it. I think this might be the first mystery I've read where the main character is a mystery writer. The setting is Hill Country in Texas, where I'd live if I were to ever move to the Lone Star State.
Sabrina moves home to Lavender, a small-ish town, to help her aunt recover from a fall and to finally decide if she is a writer or not. There is murder, her aunt is accused, Sabrina investigates. There's a good sheriff, a jealous deputy and a slew of suspects. All very viable suspects. I really liked how Sabrina got involved and stuck to it.
Eye-widening finale. I did not see that one coming...and I like when that happens.
Then there's the black cat. What a character in and of himself. Several in the town are scared of him, some want to trap him. They think he's bad luck. Sabrina knows that common sense should tell people that there's no such thing. She takes the cat in, names him Hitchcock. He's ornery and a sweetie.
I can definitely recommend this book and author. I really look forward to reading more in the series.
