I appreciated the rapid world building in the beginning. Set the scene but let’s get to the good stuff, and it delivered.
Even though all the hockey jargon and game descriptions were lost on me, it helped get in the headspace. I didn’t understand a lot of it, but I’ve read a few hockey romances where they weren’t so heavily focused on the game. I appreciated not being handled with kid gloves here. Even though I skimmed a lot of the minutiae.
I rolled my eyes at the random Fren-glish (English with french thrown in now and then - like Spanglish but with french). That was a first for me. While it bugged me initially, it also helped you stay in the headspace of French-speaking characters. I could look up individual words but damn, why write entire sentences that I do not have the will power to enter into google translate? Throw me a bone; translate the sentence in English right after.
I like that the author didn’t make their being accepted by people their relationship complication. They were just accepted. It was nice. I was all for the life-threatening injury instead of a mini breakup.
They were sappy. Which was done well and I fell in love with them together. I just prefer less sap.
