The Deer and the Dragon by Piper C.J.
slow-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? Plot
- Strong character development? No
3.5
The overall story is interesting. But slow. There are no big ah hahs or gotcha moments. We just move through the story at a relatively slow pace. While in the search for Caliban I find myself not caring about him at all. Fauna and Az are much more interesting characters that I had more attachment to as the reader. Piper’s writing style has significantly improved since TNAIM.
Bones to pick: there is a LOT of glorifying sex work in this and a LOT of hate for the Christian religion. It seems like Piper wove her own religious trauma into the story but with lots of exaggeration. It’s marketed as YHWH being the bad guy but He’s definitely not the antagonist in this book. He’s mentioned mainly in passing as being a jealous God.
