The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
5.0

Let's get this out of the way real quick: that 5-star rating is what I give the book for its intended audience. My rating for my enjoyment is more of a 3.5/5 and that's about where I'd rate it for most adults.

This isn't a book for adults, though. It's a book for middle-grade students and, if you're one of those who enjoys Egypt and/or mythology, then you should check this one out. Riordan weaves an entertaining tale that also serves to give the reader a basic guide to Egyptian mythology and history. While aspects of the gods' personalities are clearly made up for the book, their histories and role in the religion of ancient Egypt are spot on. Also, any tool used by Egyptian magicians is based on a real artifact found by Egyptologist.

I also can't say anything bad about the story. It's a well written tale. The only reason it didn't grab my attention is that it had a lot of kiddish elements that you'd expect in a book aimed at kids. Scenes that would have been more terrifying and serious in a novel written for older audiences were instead cut with humor and played down to make the novel age appropriate.

So, if none of that sounds like a bad thing to you or if you're looking for a good novel for a child between the ages of 9 and 13, then I'd give The Red Pyramid a shot, especially if you like Riordan's Percy Jackson novels.
