The Summer I Died kept me glued for its duration. It’s brutal, emotional, and suspenseful, with just the right amount of intrigue about supernatural background hums. The books issues are glaring immediately: the prose lacks style, the jokes often fall flat, and the characters aren’t given a lot of depth. Having said that, for those readers with a strong stomach, you’d be hard pressed to find a thriller more engrossing. Just don’t expect to have a lot to chew on once the meal is over.
