Rage by Richard Bachman
3.0

It's interesting that I chose to read this during a time frame where all of my thoughts are centered on a mass shooting. Not a school shooting, and not even close to the same situation, but it certainly did feel like I would never get this kind of stuff out of my brain.

Especially considering that the shooting filled me with such rage that I wanted to find a certain online group and "get it on" myself.

This was definitely an intriguing book. It's definitely early Stephen King, which is my favorite time period of his. But it didn't quite grab my attention as much as I thought it would when I read the premise.

Maybe it's because I had a hard time with Charles himself. He's not a hero, or a bad guy. He's just a guy, a teenager with all the pent up anxiety and rage that all teenagers get, who takes it just too far, and goes a little crazier than the other teenagers.

It sort of reminded me of Catcher in the Rye, in that if I'd read this when I was in high school, I would've had a far greater appreciation for it. In fact, I probably would've wanted more people to bite it if I'd read this in high school.

It really was like a fucked up Breakfast Club. I would've liked more perspective from the other kids, not just the couple that we got. A little more Buffy in Earshot, everyone's life is screwed up, not everyone grabs a gun and gets it on.

Not bad, though. Though I'm still really confused about what happened to the Jones kid.
