"A hundred years since it was planted - a span of time once too long to fathom, and now, too hard to measure. So far, she has counted time in seconds, and in seasons, in cold snaps and in thaws, in uprisings and in aftermaths. She has seen buildings fall and rise, cities burn and be remade, the past and present blurred together into a fluid, ephemeral thing."
Very late to the party on this one, but I absolutely loved it! It's so gorgeously written and meticulously thought-out, and I was just completely captivated. Rarely do I wish a 500+ page book was longer, but I honestly could've read so much more of Addie's story. It's both devastating and life-affirming, and is truly a story I don't think will ever leave me.
I will say that I wasn't entirely on board with the ending, though I do appreciate why the author chose to go in that direction. My other slight gripe is that, as much as I liked Henry's character, I felt as if some parts focused too much on him whereas with the vast scope of Addie's history I would've preferred to spend that time delving more into her past. I think that ultimately goes back to wishing it was an even longer book!
