The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

5.0

Fantastic! I became aware of it back when it was nominated for the Hugo, but something about the cover and the synopsis repelled me at the time. My girlfriend's strong recommendation finally caught me and I'm so glad I finally read it.

I thought there were lots of echos of my beloved Foreigner series by C.J. Cherryh. The language, the court intrigue, the pacing, the four dedicated personal guards, the main character starting off naive and fairly incompetent and gradually coming into his own more as an accomplished bureaucrat than as a hero.

Terribly hard to keep all of the characters straight despite the list in the beginning - I just find referencing an index to be prohibitively cumbersome when reading an e-book on my phone. Oh well.
