This story made me very emotional, the atmosphere is rich and beautifully crafted. The historical context is also very interesting. There are some minor issues, most notably I think that the character of Kath fades in comparison with the others (Shirley, family members, the women from the club, but especially Tommy Andrews), which is of course unfortunate for the main romance. But in my opinion, Lily's rich emotional world and the story of her struggle to reconcile the different aspects of her identity make up for this. In fact, I liked this so much, I will probably buy a nice copy I can put on my bookshelf.
