Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse by Shane Burcaw

5.0

This autobiographical collection of essays by Burcaw is fantastic. I hadn't heard of him until I caught a video of Shane and Hannah thanks to the "Special Books by Special Kids" series that is featured on Facebook and YouTube where they discuss their inter-abled relationship and how wonderful it is. My goodness, those two are nauseatingly in LOVE. I've read plenty of fictional romances over the past couple of years, and the amount of mush contained in this small volume puts all the rest to shame. One thing I appreciate is Shane being candid about the vulnerability present when a new partner immediately participates in his caregiving and how it's refreshing because they reach that kind of personal intimacy so much faster. They both savor taking care of each other as hopefully do most romantic folks!

Shane's humor as both a defense/shield and a way to make everyone else comfortable is quite witty (with a touch of dark and dry that I appreciate), but I can't imagine how exhausting it is to put everyone else in the room at ease when you're simply trying to live your good life. I can't wait to pick up his other books!
