Homebody/Kabul: Final Revised Version by Tony Kushner

4.0

"But in Kabul now there is no history. There is only God!"

Definitely a challenging read, deservedly so for a play tackling the themes of miscommunication and otherness. As is common with Kushner's other work, he handles more than a reader can absorb with just one read-through/viewing, but I was especially touched by the handling of the corrupt use of Islam (as someone who is from Türkiye - which is supposed to be secular - where Islam is used for political purposes through its purposeful misinterpretation by the country leaders). This play will not leave you satisfied. There is very intentional ambiguity, but it is a worthy read, if only for Kushner's use of language(s) (be it English, Pashtun, Dari or French). Good luck getting through the first monologue in one sitting!
