I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver
5.0
When Ben comes out as non-binary to their parents, they throw him out of the house and they have to move in with their sister who they haven’t seen or talked to in 10 years.
They have to move to a completely different area, living in a new house, attending a new school and adjusting to new surroundings. It’s a big change, and it isn’t easy for them.
I loved how real and raw the book was - Ben was going through a lot and I felt I was there seeing them struggle. Being rejected can be hard, and the fear and anxiety that comes with it is jarring and so well portrayed.
Things do get better though - Ben meets Nathan, a boy filled with energy and love who manages to befriend them despite their reluctance to interact with him. I loved how their friendship develops - it’s slow and Ben takes one step at a time which makes so much sense considering everything they’ve been through. There are so many fun moments which make me laugh, but also hard ones that they get through together and this is the kind of romance I always love to read - when the connection makes you feel safe and seen and allows you to be yourself in their presence.
I also loved Ben’s sister and brother-in-law. While I do wish we got to know more about them, I loved how they were always a loving and accepting force in Ben’s life who want to be there for them in any way possible.
Overall, this book felt like a warm hug even when it was sad and made me cry. It was fast and easy to read and I couldn’t put it down. This book will probably remain in my heart for a long time to come.
