I'm struggling with how I feel about this book. It's an important book to modern lovers of fantasy and model novels generally. MacDonald greatly inspired many of the canon writers, most notably C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. Parts of it are beautifully written and the story is compelling. But... The last third is ridiculously florid and preachy. There are sections that make Lovecraft seem concise in comparison. The religious message moves from metaphorical to overt in a weird, jarring way and (unsurprising for a book written in 1895) it has some tropes that are disgusting and hard to get past.
