Another great read from Erdrich. Perhaps not my favorite from the ones I’ve read of hers but another strong story with a cast of many characters.
I wouldn’t recommend starting with this one as someone’s first Erdrich. At times I had a difficult time keeping track of the characters. But knowing that this format is common for Erdrich is helpful. The slow release of knowledge of the plot with multiple characters and POVs is a staple for Erdrich. And it’s such a fun way to get into the story. It’s like eating a candy bar, you can’t just take one bite. You inevitably come back for more.
I love the writing style that Erdrich has and find it so interesting to slowly learn about characters and plot points in pieces. I didn’t like the love triangle as much but I did enjoy many of the characters.
The tragedy that impacts several of these characters was heartbreaking to learn about. I found the topic of natural vs farming with chemicals very interesting too as I’ve known about Monsanto for years. And as always, loved the nature and animals (especially birds) mentioned. I think great care was put into the mentions of potential suicidal thoughts as it’s something some characters deal with as a result from the major plot point.
Overall very well done. Solidifies my love for Erdrich for sure.
