The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

This book is an incredibly powerful and insightful look into our society and the terrifying parallels that lie within. Atwood is a literary genius, employing complex extended metaphors and descriptions that are never once cliche or annoying. Many scenes are disturbingly similar to real events (particularly the scene where the handmaid's chant that it was "her fault, she lead them on" when one of their number tells about a gang rape she endured as a teenager). This book is unlike any dystopia out there; its world is so complex and its characters so real you can't help but believe in them. The book weaves past and present together seamlessly and I was never once confused. Pleaseā€”do not let life slip by without reading this incredible tour de force by a literary genius.
