An absolute masterpiece! This is one of those books you read and wonder why you read anything else. Steinbeck is in the pantheon of American writers, and there aren’t many above him. I was constantly awed by the style of writing, the perspective shifts, and the imagery throughout this story, not because these elements are blatant and showy, but because they blend into the story so well that they seem to work at a subconscious level. The artifice isn’t there to be seen, but instead to enhance an incredible story. East of Eden is a story first, but ultimately so much more than that.
