Why I Write by George Orwell

4.0

A great little volume.

The three shorter essays are especially good - the first ('Why I Write') and last ('Politics and the English Language') because they are actively useful for anyone who writes. I will, in fact, be copying out some of the sections from 'Politics' to go on my desk at work as a constant reminder.

The third - 'A Hanging' - will stick with me for a long time. A dark and human vignette. It is compelling.

Haven't given this one five stars purely because the second essay (much longer than the rest) doesn't quite have the punch of the others. Still, it provides an insight to the state of the English nation and politics at the beginning of the Second World War, for which it is worthy of attention.
