This triad of supernatural tales moves between gothic, magical realism and modern fantasy using the weird to explore the deeply human dimensions of death, love, knowledge and mental illness. Gray is a master of the short story and this collection particularly shows her ability to move between genres. The titular narrative is an imaginative and thought provoking exploration of terminal illness which packs a punch like that of Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper. As always Gray’s tales remain moving, funny and fresh; a constant reminder that I am not reading enough short stories!
