Dept. of Speculation
by Jenny Offill
This is the third book I read this week where the story really isn’t a story, where it’s not much of anything. I don’t get it. I read this book because it was on a best-of list. What am I not understanding? Maybe this book and the other two would only make sense to people who’ve been married at some point?
The book is at least short and easy to read, and it does have some nice turns of phrases. Some of the writing was lovely. And while it was mostly a stream of consciousness, I could follow it and understand what was taking place in the narrator’s life. So in that sense, there was at least a semblance of progression.
