I’m on a little bit of a YA book streak right now and I had a lot of fun reading this teen rom-com about Riley, a girl obsessed with theater, and Nathan, a boy who works in her dad’s gaming store. To summarize, Riley basically gets into trouble and her punishment is to work in her dad’s store that sells board games, Dungeons and Dragons stuff, etc., (which doesn’t sound so bad to me but what do I know) when she’d really rather be working on her plan to get the spring musical back on track. There she is met with Nathan, a boy she goes to school with but she doesn’t really know, and his friends who play DND in the store too. When she and Nathan agree to help each other by pretending to date, the line between frenemies and something more blurs.
I thought this was a solid YA romance mixed with a lot of fun theater mentions and DND information. I will say it does move pretty quickly and I feel like there were moments where I felt like Riley was being a little self-centered, but I mean she is a teenager and who wasn’t self-centered at that age to be honest, especially where her dad is concerned. The plot is definitely predictable but I think it’s what you want from a YA romance like this. I think it feels like the 2000’s rom-coms I watched when I was a teen and I did enjoy that vibe.
