The Dinner by Herman Koch

4.0

I read this book in just about two days, definitely a compelling and quick read. Am I supposed to have empathy for the narrator, his nasty wife and their evil son? I loved how the author tried to make you feel empathy for these characters and to dislike Serge - the only character who tried to do the right thing.

It is interesting to relate this to all of the real parents of real criminals in our news today. What would you do if these were your children? Protect them at all costs or do the right thing? Having not been in this position before, to me the answer is easy - do the right thing, but...

Not even going to reflect on Beau, tragic and somehow disposable to his "parents".
