In the Time of the Butterflies
by Julia Alvarez
This is a fictionalized history of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic during the mid twentieth century dictatorship. It's well written with an unusual but compelling organization. This is not normally the kind of book I read, but I found it interesting. This was a history lesson for me, and a reminder of how people can get used to gradually encroaching oppression. We all find ourselves eventually in that place where we have to accept increasingly intolerable oppression or face the fear that stands between us and freedom. This book, I think, is about that.
