I first read this series when I was a teenager and I remembered loving it. I picked it up again out of curiosity, to see how well it held up. It was special to me because at the time I was reading a lot of fantasy books by men and if there where women characters at all the tended to be nagging horrible stereotypes. Thats to say, I think it might be getting a couple of nostalgia points.
My main issue with this is that the pacing is off. The last half the book the characters are almost constantly in some kind of peril. They would escape one thing and then there would be a paragraph or writing before they were in danger again. It took away from the tension for me. I think it needed more space. It's a huge book but the last half felt like it had too much packed into it. I wanted to spend more time in a situation and with the characters.
Overall I liked the main characters, although they did often behave like petulant teenagers and some or the dialogue was a little cringe (I can forgive that, it was written in the 90s). Also the romantic relationships have some uncomfortable dynamics. The main character does keep accidentally falling into the next bit of plot. She just keeps appearing at places she needs to be.
