The Last Final Girl by Stephen Graham Jones

3.0

I love Stephen Graham Jones - The Only Good Indians is one of my favourite novels in recent years, full stop, and the Jade Daniels books have become firm favourites. It hurts me a little to give this a middling review, but sadly I did have issue with it.

It's certainly a fun slasher. While not on the same level as My Heart Is A Chainsaw, it has Jones' playing with tropes and genre stereotypes in a way he has so frequently, and the story is decent. I'm not crazy about the screenplay-esque framing device though, honestly. I listened to the audiobook and it worked pretty well, I can see it potentially being a struggle in writing though.

If you're a fan of the author, you've read his 'hits' and you want more, this is definitely worth your time. Just temper your expectations a little, and be prepared to potentially have to persevere through the writing style for this one.
