Really a compelling start to a series, though it took some time to get into it. The author knows more than you do and makes that very clear; certain plot beats are extremely confusing until you read more and the eventual exposition is just fascinating enough to keep going. The main character goes through a lot and doesn't make the choices you expect from the average jfic protagonist. Excited to read part 2!
