I kind of don't know where to start with this. This novel manages to take an aesthetic and a sensibility I am very familiar with from my childhood (and, similarly, don't usually like very much) and a bunch of f*cking cool ideas that will get me every single time, which then in retrospect has made me very nostalgic for the very aesthetic and sensibility I just bemoaned. Sorry, I know that sentence was weird. My feelings about this are weird.
This book is very sad. A lot of really, really terrible things happen to a lot of people who deserve better. It has a lot of raw bad luck that just sucker punches you in the throat. But also every single thing that happens is incredibly badass. But also every single thing that happens is drowning in yearning, desperation, and grief. Every character is dynamic and flawed and interesting and you want them to win, but every character is completely crippled by their misgivings about connecting with others and you say 'that's right, idiot,' when they lose. It is so, so tragic, and yet the ending gives you JUST enough Ws that you leave it saying. My god. Humans are fucking beautiful. We are really beautiful creatures that are very stupid and gorgeous. I cannot stop thinking about the ending of this book.
